Terrence Underwood, a 30-year hotel and resort-industry veteran, has presided as general manager of the Grande Colonial Hotel and NINE-TEN Restaurant, part of the Franklin Croft Hospitality collection, since October of 1999. He also provides his expertise in market repositioning, capital project management, revenue management and electronic distribution management for Franklin Croft Hospitality’s other hotels including the Hampton Inn Del Mar and Colonial Terraces.
As General Manager of the Grande Colonial, Underwood has complete operational and directional responsibilities for the 93-room, Four Diamond hotel including rooms and related services, sales and marketing, development of the company’s policies and staff, as well as management of all food and beverage and financial operations.
Prior to joining the Grande Colonial, Underwood spent six years as Resident Manager of La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, Inc., owner and operator of a 17-acre oceanfront resort in La Jolla. As Resident Manager, he was responsible for all rooms and private club operations for the 90-room La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club and the 128-room Sea Lodge Hotel.
Underwood’s hotel and resort industry career began in 1982 when he joined the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Tennis Club. He spent the next 11 years working for Marriott in a variety of capacities including rooms operations, recreations services and human resources in Newport Beach, La Jolla, Desert Springs and at Marriott’s flagship property, the 1,355-room San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina.
Underwood’s professional affiliations (past and present) include seats on the board of directors of: the San Diego North Convention & Visitors Bureau; California Hotel Lodging Association; San Diego Tourism Authority’s (formerly ConVis) Board of Directors and Marketing and Community Relations Committees; San Diego Hotel & Motel Association; and Promote La Jolla, La Jolla’s business improvement district. His active roles in the community have earned him a spot in the La Jolla Light’s “Top 18 People to Watch in La Jolla in 2013”. He was also awarded the 2012 Gold Key Award for Hotel person of the Year by the San Diego County Hotel & Motel Association.
Underwood is a Bachelor of Science graduate of the Cornell School of Hotel Administration. He resides in Rancho Bernardo with his wife and three children.
