Nearly 71 years ago Western Civilization turned its startled, then staring eyes to the beach with the introduction of the shocking, culture assaulting, fashion busting bikini.

The Bikini Atoll

Part of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean, between 1946 and 1958, 23 nuclear devices were detonated by the U.S. at seven test sites at the Bikini Atoll.

Called “Operation Crossroads”, the first test – nicknamed Able – took place on July 1, 1946.

Which explosion was bigger?

The Rest Is History!

The Bikini

In 1946, Louis Réard, was running his mother's lingerie business near Paris and noticed women on the St. Tropez beaches rolling up their swimsuits to get a better tan.

Inspired by a minimalist two-piece swimsuit called the "Atome" created by a French fashion designer, Louis Réard trimmed more fabric off the bottom of the suit and exposed the navel for the first time.

On July 5,1946 at a public pool in Paris, he held a press
conference five days after the Operation Crossroads test and called it “The Bikini” His “String Bikini” design, which consisted of 30 sq. inches of fabric, shocked the world because it was the first to show a woman’s navel

Did you know that in the early 1920s, this swimwear was considered Risqué and women were taken to jail for Indecent exposure? It’s true!
